He must be killed

Here's a taste of Islam that some are denying is true.

The author of the article, Samir Khalil Samir, an Egyptian Jesuit, is a professor of Islamic studies and of the history of Arab culture at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut and at the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome; he is the founder of the Centre de Recherche Arabes Chrétiennes and president of the International Association for Christian Arabic Studies. In September of 2005 he participated, at Castel Gandolfo, in a study meeting with Benedict XVI on the concept of God in Islam.

Dear Joey- I am wholeheartedly a christian - or try to be one. I would like people to respect my values, and not to mouth off about it without knowing anything.

A friend sent me this extremely sarcastic piece about fundamentalist Christianity. It may jog your thoughts about how things look from a religion's inside vs from outside.

More "plain" talk from the scriptures

I would like to thank Messrs. Mills, Huber and Paepke for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from reading your words. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them:

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? Conventional wisdom in this geographical area estimates business revenues to be down approximately 30% on the year. Hopefully this information will prove useful to your response.

I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15:19- 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A associate of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself? Is there something akin to "conscientious objector" status offered in the scriptures?

A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I find this incredulous, and strongly disagree. Can you settle this?

Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I used to wear reading glasses, but recently underwent LASEK surgery. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die? See my inquiry on "conscientious objector" status above.

I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging, and I look forward to further enlightenment.

Dude,

I'm confused.

1) What is the "log" in my eye? (honestly not sure of your exact admonition)

2) How is the Law of Moses relevant to a comparison between my beliefs and that of Islam? (I think this is your point.)

Thanks,

js

sorry to be oblique. i was in a hurry to get this out between jobs.

the log and the law of moses are related in the post: passages taken out of context from the law are the log(s) that people can see in our eye(s)

we all know people who converse about faith by dropping seagull shit (mostly things that the church did in the past and has renounced, e.g. inquisition, or oblique passages from scripture, interpreted out of context) into a conversation.

we should not do the same to our muslim fellow men.

At the top of the thread I added a short bio of the author who wrote the article. I am certain there is no seagull-type behavior from this author who is an expert on Christanity, Islam and Arab culture.

Here is a nice essay by the same author describing the Pope's approach to Islam.

Nice one, Joey! this is very good. very cogent analysis.

btw: eva and i have ordered some of the foster parent info from pime. we can give you a copy if you'd like to

DHM (Der Herr Margl),

I assume you mean Pontifico Instituto Mssioni Estere, Foster Parent Mission Club.

If so then I think this is exactly what Shelley has been seeking.  She wants names and real effects.  I will show this to her.  Nice lead, we will look further.

js
